We have been looking out the kitchen window at this seen for at least a month now. What a successfull dance of sculpture and three hydrangia . Our Friend John Trainor gave the three bushes to us this spring . I don't know the nane of them but they look good at all stages of bloom so far. The sculpture is called Cirque Royal. Each of the swirols of white is a crown of a dead king or queen.

There on the left is the drive way and the door mat and the door is right around the corner of the house. This is the second placement and the sculpture is called Quartz Night. It is equiped with solar lights that illuminates the key hole when we return at night. There is an out door light around the corner but it's not working. The Solution search leads me to new places. Not allways optimal but entertaining.

The first sculpture placement was selected by my partner Rita as the amount of space we now can work with over whelmed me. This one is called Paramount. It is about 15 years old and at the time I was fasinated with how every thing is made of pieces. It's one thing to know it's true but to be fastenated by that realization is something else. I'm still as fasinated. Are you?

Heres a long view of some of the atmosphere to work with. In the back ground is my studio and between is a pile of dismanteled sculpture.stones and quartz rock all of which will eventually be brought into various forms. Yes alot of pieces scattered about!

The forrest of spruce and the table legs have a good conversation between them.

Hi to any one who hasnt seen me post in a long time. Thanks for checking in now and then. Rita and I bought this beautifull place and it had absorbed most of my time. Rita has a blog now that is linked above. It is full of new things and discoveries. Un like me she has a way with words and conversation. I hope you find it as entertaining as I do. We found an old chicken coop turned into a home back in 1950.

We bought it and now live here. This image is what we saw back in august around 7:30 in the evening.

This will be our 4th night sleeping here and there is 26" of snow on the ground.

I just noticed there was no writing on this older post. This is an image by my friend Don Wilkinson. He lives in Fairhaven MA. When I first saw it I wanted it. That dosn't hapen to me too often. We are trading a sculpture for it. Again another rare transaction. The falue and worth between two concenting adults of the object and its enthuiastic impact is enough. Don't try this at home or between two serious art collectors. Once $ has entered the picture it seldom leaves.

Gluttony

There are 14 artists with new work for a show at Colo Colo Gallery in New Bedford, MA.

Don Wilkinson an artist who shows with Colo Colo is curating this show. A facet of his work is the subject of the seven deadly sins; a part of the christian religions. He assigned each of us, seven women and seven men, a sin . I received the sin of gluttony and the above sculpture is what I created. I'm looking forward to the show in December this year to see all the variety. I'll post the show information when I get it.

I'm almost certain it isn't necessary to be a sinner to attend.

First born Shiitake from plugs set in June 2009. Should it take this long? Well it did and it's a joy to see.
The bamboo across the logs keep the plastic cover a bit above. The logs are laying on a moss table I made years ago. Steel frame and a concrete top recessed like a large tray filled with wet peet. It works!

The writing below will be published in a catalog on my sculpture. I wrote it and I hope it is coherent .

My work is in one way presenting you with it's touch or more accurately the way it touches.
The way it contacts the ground that you're standing on,or the way it hangs from a ceiling right above you,the way each part of it touches another part as you look-climb your way through,contacting,connecting and the way one part will lean in close to another and how that other part responds. A sympathetic leaning in by a viewer to the sculpture leaning out,the idea the relationships,they end up being with you and that is being with something in a way I like and understand. Our bodies contain these same material elements too; it's no wonder we can understand a language that has no words.

This isn't an action adventure story I'm telling it's more like a Japanese short story or a really good poem found unexpectedly in Sports Illustrated. The subject of these sculptures more often plays a supportive role to the way it is performing. The sculpture ought not to surprise anyone who values their perception of emotional intelligence as a rewarding experience in and of it self and especially when it becomes intrinsic to an object.

Consciously bending steel with my hands bit by bit is equivalent to saying something slowly and carefully to a loved one. It's what, it's how, it's when, for how long and the nature of the force applied. There all united into one motion that stays where I left it. The steel is a supportive component and expression for another material; white quartz. This is a material that presents itself with minor intervention on my part.

Silica dioxide, better known as white quartz, is a very bright, expressive and useful material. It has just the right molecular density, color, sizes, variety and availability to satisfy me. Quartz has offered me so much and why shouldn't it since we live on a planet consisting of so much of it. We actually walk the ground it's strewn with; and 60% of the earths crust is quartz. I've been picking up quartz stones since I can remember and am thrilled to find something so common and at the same time so valuable. That's a metaphor I revel in.

The malleable steel will support a gesture that quartz then congratulates by simply being what it is. This back and forth combination is my own applied language. For many of us conscience and justification operate inside the same chamber of our body. They're different but equally powerful monitors of our body. When I think of conscience ,I think quartz. It helps me decide what and what not to make and present. You'll recognize my work more by it's gestures than the changing subjects that support them.

Disturbing the past. Have you ever heard that's not a good thing to do? I took some quartz rocks in my mind and through them at a plank that's been under my house for safe keeping. I found the plank submerged in a river below an old blacksmiths house. It had some old hand forged nails in it . It is about my height or taller and it weighed a lot .
It kind of looks like a plank that got a bunch of snow balls thrown at it.
I carved out holes in the wood to accommodate the various sized quartz; some poked through and some didn't. It defies physics and my own convention of thought and that is a success in this case.

The image above is a detail of the sculpture below called Summer Tower 1. It was just bought to be situated in a garden. The garden designer Kathrine Neville selected it for a roof top garden on the new Science Center in Hartford, CT. The building was designed by Cezar Peli. It opened this May. I'm going Wednesday to begin installing. Those honey dipper like things dangle in the breeze. Hartford is really the windiest city and they will be dangling alot.

In 1992 I found these words below and can't remember where there from but have refered to them often.

The Temple belonging to the Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land) Buddhist sect,had been destroyed by American bombers during World War II, and Kiyotani's father, also a monk, had reconstructed the building. Kiyotani was to restore the artistic features. "He was very relaxed about the prospect," says Bartlett.(Jennifer Bartlett is an artist)

Bartlett went to meet the monk and see the temple. Then she traveled all over Japan looking at ceilings. "what if you don't like it ?" she asked Kiyotani. "Everything new looks strange for the first 200 years," he responded,"and then it looks fine."

Quartz Night is the first of a series that will make up a village. They're creatures of habitation. They are hidden some what in tall grasses. There is a path that brings a person physically closer to them. I don't know how many more there will be but this one is calling for company. There is a large quartz bolder at the bottom and a vein of quartz pebbles that drift from the bolder to the top. The roof is made of galvanized sheet steel and the entire steel structure is painted aluminium.

This is very satisfying for me to see. What a birthday cake!!! This was taken yesterday and now many of the shiitake are on a drying rack which is shown above the cake. It's known that dried upside down in the sun increases the health benefits dramatically. How much exactly? Very dramatically........

Shiitake wow I finally am growing them. Rita got me the plugs for my birthday and they arived . The logs we found cut on the side of the road last winter ready for the chipper. I knew enough to grab them early as they need to dry out a bit. That was feburary and it's June now . The logs are ready and I drilled holes in them acording to the instructions that arived with the "plug spawn" , ohoo all these new terms. This link is where mine came from, www.fungi.com also

you'l need cheese wax at www.cheesemaking.com and proably other sources.

Next the cheese wax gets dbl.boiler melted to pour or as I did dribble with a paintbrush over the spaun plugs and the ends of the logs. this keeps competing fungi from the shiitake and keeps moisture in.

The image above is of the logs in a shady, moist and foliage over top kind of place.

Who knows if it will work but you can't successfully fail if you dont try! Now I just have to foreget all about them for 6-9 months unless it becomes dry and they'l need a sprinkle of water.

The Roof Top Garden is out side for the first time. It is not finished allthough the rough form is here. It will be part of a group of others like it. They'l be positioned in another area of the garden with different types of grasses growing around them and a path to be able to visit each one. There is more too but that will have to come as a supprise and in an image only.

We (most of us) live with a roof over our heads. I also like the way alpaka's interact. These are two of the motivations for The Roof Top Garden .

Black Earth

Googling bio-char will describe better than I can the benefits of this practice. In the middle of the vegetable garden I put a barrel of steel with a lid that has a hole in the middle. All the debris from last years growth gets burned in it. The charcoal gets spread over the garden beds and dug in. When there is a lot of hot coals in the barrel

the lid goes on. The barrel has a few holes around the sides that at this point get plugged up with some loose fitting bolts.

Now it simmer burns into a pile of charcoal. When it cools down a bit I take the lid off and add snow to stop it or water. In the morning the charcoal gets spread on the beds. It's fun too.

OH GOD!!

Yesterday Rita and I had lunch with an old but young friend in Norwich, CT. Mushroom soup and asparagus mixed with conversation of a religious order. Catholic schools , artists, a nun beating a young girl for wearing her hair in bangs . The young girl then tore off the nuns habit in retaliation never to return to the school again. Rulers as weapons, festering wounded saints being resurrected with shovels and coming out smelling of roses. More delicious mushroom soup and for desert, tea with round weight less host like wafers made from almonds and egg white. Water ,air and blood seemed to rule the day mixed with the most famous ingredient of all LAUGHTER!!!! which leads me to......

The day before yesterday I was cleaning piles of drawings/art from 1968-80 or so and found this quote: "Seriousness seeks to exclude play, where as play can very well include seriousness." If any one knows who said this I'd love to give just attribution. Which leads me to the sumi drawing above OH GOD!! that I made of a character poking fun at GOD while in a dangerous balancing act of absurdity at that. I hope you've been entertained but now this nut has to go find a squirrel.

The above and below in the snow that is no longer there as of a week ago is how the sculpture is coming along. The snow does most of the light catching that other wise would be hard to see. Speaking of that it will be painted a dull green of some kind to slow down the awareness of it all and make the experience a gradual, slower one. There are temples of sorts ( I'll put an image on the blog) with antenna that go in the center of each of those horizontal circles. The circles will be ringed with quartz as well as the central platform in each circle. Then that sphere of concrete in the previous entries will go skirting around the central stone. There will be inclining platforms too that help the quartz get from the ground up to the "Destination". If you look strait down on the whole thing it's a figure eight; a blobby teardrop strait on. It's far from all those nude Indians laying around in their sun but I see the feel is there.

I went to Moon Rise to make an adjustment to Moon Rise Quartz Migration. large boulders were added to and rearanged while the entrance was expanded and unified with more gravel. Beauitfull! So I needed to add a few more white quartz stones to work with the other changes. While there I photographed something I made over the past winter. Their called
Moon Rise Uppings Their all hanging from the rafters that over hang the breezeway between the frontdoor and the garage.

P.S. The spiral cone in the back ground hanging from the eave, is incence that burns "24/7".

It smells like all the religions in the world got thrown in to a caldron and boiled down by half. The good stuff rose to the surface and was scummed off,dryed and made in to this incence. There ya have it. It's just my sence of smell.

Now it's something else. The integrity of the two halve's is still de-intacted.

Quartz stones bubble up from the surface now and the holes drop through. The lightness of color will darken in time. The light ness is a result of a mix of 1/3 hydrated lime in the final mix ov concrete. Stay tuned for the next stage.....

Now all the structure is covered. The first coat of concrete receives a second and a third and maybe a fourth to get the surface where it needs to be. This is a new thing for me to do; showing you the various stages that go into a sculpture. I can imagine it will be good to know the history behind a set form. It too may be a surprise to see how many conscious decisions are attributed to an object that really has no direct reference to anything but it's viewers presents.

Often the internal structure of some of the forms I make are more interesting to people than what I want to ultimately see. So here is a look before it's covered. The brown lines are steel welded together as a framework to support the galvinized steel mesh that skins over the surface. This surface will have some pass through holes and some quartz will be cemented into some.

Eggplant

I selected two shiny, firm, dark purple Italian eggplant that were 2" in diameter and about 6" long. I'm writing this because I'm very happy with my technique of cooking it as follows.

Lay out left to right two dinner plates and one small flat bottomed bowl all right next to one another. Let two seasoned cast iron fry pans come to a medium heat dry and with no oil in them while you're working on the eggplant In the bowl add 2 tbls.each of olive oil and water, add two eggs. Whip it up with a fork.
Slice the eggplant with out peeling into disks about 1/4" thick. Dragging the tines of a fork down the length of them adds a place of purchase for the knife to dig through the sometimes bouncy resistance.

On the plate just to the left of the bowl add 3/4 c. of fine corn meal and a 1/4 c. whole wheat or white flour and mix together and spread out. . Add more later if need be.

Dip the slices in the egg mixture and wipe off excess on the side of the bowl. Lay on the bed of corn flour. When the plate is covered turn each of them over and pat the flour into the eggplant until they are dry enough to transfer to the empty plate on your left. Keep stacking them on top of one another till their all breaded . Lay them in the dry pan fairly close together.

They will kind of bake on the pan and the oil in the egg mixture as well as the flour is enough to keep them from sticking. keep watching but about 10 min. a side.

You'll notice that there is no salt in this recipe. I personally like the eggplant to be addressed from the outside by any salt or sauce; it's subtle integrity formally introduced at the plate.

Filtration

This is a water filtration "system" as it's called by the smart and confident people. I on the other hand wanted to filter out excess white material from the coffee machine water. It also had to be done with out spending any money. Here it is and it works beautifully. One gallon glass lined Thermos,circa 1920, porcelain Melita funnel,coffee filter and a home made spout. The perk is it tastes better too.

I made this object on the right out of steel and quartz. It is called an Upping and there are going to be about 14 of them of various forms. They hang from architecture and are designed to sway back and forth in a breeze. They are being commissioned by a special client who likes living with them. They hang from a covered walk way open to the southern breeze. The bells ring, the birds sing and a resinous incense burns continuously. Sounds like a dream but it isn't. Or is it?

Sanitary Carpentary

This is a Sponge Bed and my design is inspired by a Cornell University study a number of years ago. The study found that wood and any kind of wood ,clean and with out varnish or sealers can destroy bacteria. It was found if memory is correct that 98.5% of the bacteria on a piece of wood is gone after a 12 or 24 hour period( I forget which).

I immediately thought of those smelly sponges and went to work on the above wood support. It works! My sponges never smell any more and last a long time. Feel free to make your own and enjoy the comfort of the Sponge Bed! And all you beautiful cutting board angels; it's Ok you can come back now, we didn't know any better then. Please forgive us.

comming home to roost

I made these concrete S.U.V's a few years ago. Their linked together by a chain running through their internal selves. Their each about 4" long (10.16 cm) . Where I live many people drive these look-a-like vehicles. They are bloated and top heavy and there american.

They are all ready concidered obsolete and will be abandoned on mass. What can be done with these forms? My first thought is to gut them, recycle the plastic and make them into a suberban chicken coops. This smells like a bussness oppertunity! You could even get the kit that suits your make and model. If any one has an idea to share it would be fun to read.

My friend Roberta gave me this image to contemplate. The fashion of the two women looks to be 1920 ? I can feel the wind and the warmth of the sun and the smell too. Were going to Paris in September . Every molicule has been influenced since this picture was taken. This is not a photograph of Paris. Photography realy is a unique joke on time and space . I can't hold my breath as well as a photograph can.

Quartz Server is in the garden

After a long winter waiting for dry sunny weather to complete Quartz Server it's now complete.
I find serving is such an under appreciated act of faith. I wanted to reinforce the serve -serve-serve with the three trays. most of the quartz lays in the steel mesh trays but some are mounted in tiny pedestals to enhance the liveliness of what is being served. I hope you see the server ,if its you or another in a new way. I don't think I'm through with serving up the server at this time! Bon appetit!

This is about sculpture and I havn't shown sculpture too much .
The sumi drawing at the right is the begining of a sculpture and some progression will follow. The three trays will eventually be serving small quartz confection.

The farthist image is the sculpture and Iv'e called it Quartz Server. It is not finished. The quartz at the right on the table will go on the trays and the grey metal will be painted. Warm dry weather is all I need. It will be shown outdoors in the silver garden which I'll show you when the weather improves. It is great to have a speciall place where all the silver ones go.

This is a sculpture that was made by me and installed by me on the entry way to the collectors home. there is alot of chatter today on collecting art that has me thinking. With all the bravery in accumulating wealth I'm thinking how timid those same people can be when it comes to buying art. But yes art IS another story.
Here is my FREE advice: If you don't want to become an art investor try using love. Love is always yours to give or withhold. It can take the place of money as a stand in for studying and "consuming" the very thing in front of you with out spending a dime. Think of it as your birth right commodity with which to rub up against art . With nothing to lose who cares if it's a STRANGER! You can get to know or not at no expense at all. When you are done move on. Put the money down only when you have a relationship with this"stranger".
The sculpture on the left was consumed with love and paid for with money. The money means it is now a part of this property. love was the vehicle that got it here and keeps it here. The one thing that dosn't go astray is change. Art for me is about loving a stranger even if it is us.

It's amazing what a small thing can do to lift the spirits. How many times with gained skill I fetched out of the drain hole any number of things. Grey slime, hair and other scumie stuff.

I made this brass drain cover and it was good! A little "home land security" goes a long way.

For Sensitive Skin

This is a good example of the kind of ingredients that are in my soup. I made this watering can with a cheap funnel and an old watering can sprinkler I had around. Some silicone calk and aluminium pop rivits to hold the funnel on. My sprinkler has a fine spray for seedlings. It can be made with out the sprinkler too. The recycling and carbon saving detail isn't interesting to me but it is a deal to make. I left the lable in place because now in it's altered state it makes me laugh.

This is my first entry and I like to show you some of the blogs that inspired me to begin. The blog search started with a search in Paris for any thing and every thing to do with the City Of Light. Rita and I are going to visit for the first time and I went over the edge searching the blog world on this subject. We especially want to see the things that are in museums, galleries and public places. I'm not saying the ........ word as a way to refresh myself toward seeing clearly.

This blog was my first and still a favorite kitchen-notebook.blogspot.com It's so well done and beautifull to look at.
